New Mexico allows funding for ‘Rust’ shooting prosecutions

SANTA FE, New Mexico — New Mexico has provided funds to pay for potential prosecutions related to last year’s fatal shooting of a cinematographer by actor Alec Baldwin, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported Thursday.

The state Board of Finance authorized more than $317,000 to cover the cost of investigating possible charges in the “Rust” set shooting outside Santa Fe.

First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies made an emergency request for the funds to go to a special prosecutor, special investigator, various experts and other staff.

Up to four people could face charges, according to a copy of the application obtained by the newspaper, though Carmack-Altwies did not say anyone definitely would.

“One of the possible accused is the well-known film actor Alec Baldwin,” he stated.

When contacted by the newspaper for comment, she declined to say which members of the crew or cast might face charges. Possible charges her office is looking into range from murder to violations of state gun statutes.

Carmack-Altwies said she hopes to receive the final report of the investigation from the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office soon.

Baldwin was pointing a gun at cinematographer Halyna Hutchins when it blew up on October 1. 21, killing her and wounding the director, Joel Souza. They had been inside a small church during the montage to film a scene.

Baldwin has said that the gun went off accidentally and that he did not pull the trigger. But a recent FBI forensic report found that the gun could not have been fired unless someone pulled the trigger.

The film’s gunsmith, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, has been named in several lawsuits, including a wrongful death lawsuit brought by the Hutchins family.
